The popular word crunching game WordsWorth is coming to Android Smartphones, Kindle Fire and the NOOK. So get set to challenge your friends with Android and iOS devices for a quick round of wordplay on WordsWorth!!!

For those of you who haven’t yet played WordsWorth, you link letters to form words on a beautiful honeycomb structure. Wild Cards, Power-Ups and Timed Tiles affect your score for the better or for worse. Ultimately the longer the word and more valuable the tiles used, the more points you earn. If word crunching has always been your passion, you’re in for a treat! Our best-selling word game for iPhone, WordsWorth, is going free on 11th March. So, what does WordsWorth has to offer you ask? Pretty much everything a word game lover could ask for!

How to play:

Link letters to form words on a beautiful honeycomb structure. The longer the word, the higher the points you earn. Simple, right? The game offers several modes of gameplay. You can choose from Classic, Timed and Tumble mode.

Classic mode: Play at a relaxed pace and make as many words as you can. The game ends when the Timed Tile explodes.
Timed mode: Play a fast-paced game and race against the ticking clock to move ahead.
Tumble mode: Play a challenging game with the words tumbling from the top. The game ends when the words reach the top of the screen.

Now, that was just the Single Player mode. If competition is what you enjoy, you can Play with Friends by either sending them a challenge through Facebook or just by searching for their Username in WordsWorth. Besides this, you can also play with Random Opponents.

WordsWorth has an amazing Vocab Power rating system that lets you challenge players whose word-building skills are up your alley using the WordsWorth Clubs. Though the much-anticipated iPad 3 Apple Event is still a couple of days away, the internet has been abuzz with rumors of Retina Display, A5X chip, cheaper iPad 2 and what not for months now. Yeah, Apple fans are eternal optimists!

While a few of us are now headed out to GDC to flaunt our games in front of the jurnos, exchange notes with other devs & hitting the party circuit, we decided to step on the gas and are all set to support the rumored iPad 3 in our 2 upcoming titles so that our users can enjoy the joys of Retina Display on their brand new iPads.

After all those sleepless nights, it’s time to stand back take a look at what we’re achieved so far.

The Social Game:

For our Hollywood-themed Social game, our target was to keep its bundle size less than 20 MB while making sure that the graphics look crisp on the speculated 2048x 1536 iPad 3 resolution! But with more than 500 different costumes and various exotic locations planned for the game, this was quite a challenge! We decided to use vector graphics to support universal resolutions to make the images work on all devices without getting pixelated.

Along with this, we also used Anti-aliasing to smoothen the curves in the game scenes and characters avoiding jagged edges. This made a huge difference in the graphics clearly visible in the screenshots below!

Despite using Vector graphics, the sheer amount of animations in the game threatened to take it way beyond the 20 MB target we had. We also used in-house engineered segmented animation, which helped us bring down the game size further.

The Time Management Game:

For our Nightclub-themed Time Management game, the technique we used in the Social Game did not fit in well. We were looking for glossy effect with smooth color gradients that suited the Nightclub environment. This was the main reason behind using Bitmap graphics. Coupled with double the resolution to be supported for iPad 3, this meant a huge trade-off with file size but the final result was worth it!

While our previous Time Management games like Prison Mayhem was over 170 MB in size without Retina display support, with this game we currently have a bundle size of 100 MB using suitable texture file formats and masking techniques. Hopefully with some optimization, we’ll be able to get this reduced further. The higher resolution textures for iPad 3 also bring with it another issue of doubling the texture memory usage. We tackled this with the game engine designed to keep the texture memory under control. While the glossy backgrounds are full colored ARGB8888 textures, all the character animations are dithered to ARGB4444 format, bringing down the animation memory usage by half.

And now, with bated breath, we wait for the Apple Event in the hopes of being one of the first developers to release an iPad 3-supported game!
