There are three versions of Chess from 99Games. Which one is suitable for me?
Chess Lite is for beginners or for those players who would like to learn a few tricks and Chess Rules. You can play against the iPhone, or vice versa. This version has a medium level complexity, with the last, next and legal moves highlighted, limited Save/ Load option, and a demo to show you how iPhone plays Chess.

Chess Pro is for the seasoned Chess players, who know the rules of the game and wish to be challenged with different complexity levels and variants such as Suicide and Losers.
This version has 3 levels of complexity, 3 variants, 3D themes, Save/ Load/ Resume options, legal moves hint, last move and next move hint and many other features.

Chess Elite is for Online play where you play against real-players across the world. Chess Elite fuses the power of one of the strongest Chess Engine in App Store with the power of Web to keep you connected on the go and provides you with the best challenges. The game is perfectly crafted for both the beginners and the advanced players.

How to play Suicide and Losers variant?
Suicide: Suicide is a form of chess where the goal is to lose all your pieces. Your king acts like a normal piece and can be captured, and you can promote pawns to a king. If you can capture, you must.

Suicide is sometimes referred to as giveaway or anti-chess, although there are minor differences between variants.
In suicide, castling is not allowed, but in giveaway it is. If a player is stalemated, he loses in giveaway, but in suicide he wins if he has less material than his opponent.

You can get more information about this variant from Wikipedia.

Losers: Losers is similar to suicide with the exception that the king may not be captured, you cannot promote pawns to kings, and if you are checkmated you win.

How do I play Chess?
Chess is a recreational and competitive game played between two players. You can also play the game against a device such as iPhone, Mac or a PC. If you have an iPhone/ iPod touch, download Chess from iTunes store and launch the game. Run the 'Demo' option to see how iPhone plays the chess game. For more detailed moves, visit Wikipedia for detailed Chess rules.

What is Castling? How do I do it in your Chess game?
As mentioned in Wikipedia - Castling is a special move in the game of chess involving the king and either of the original rooks of the same color. Castling consists of moving the king two squares towards a rook, then moving the rook onto the square over which the king crossed. Castling can only be done if the king has never moved, the rook involved has never moved, the king is not in check, and the king does not cross over or end on a square in which it would be in check. Castling is considered a King move.

Which Chess engine do you use?
99Games Chess uses Sjeng version 11.2, Copyright © 2000-2001 Gian-Carlo Pascutto licensed under GNU GPL. You can get more details about Sjeng here.

You are making use of GNU Chess. Can I get the source code?
Sure. We have modified the Sjeng source code and as per the GNU GPLv2 terms we will be providing the entire source code on demand, free of charge. Please email to our support team. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY for the modified source code.

We thought of packaging the entire source code with the Binary uploaded to App Store. If we do this, there is no way that a user can extract the source code from the application downloaded on the iPhone/iPod touch. So we have given the above provision.

Why do you charge fee for a GNU GPL Program?
As per "TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR COPYING, DISTRIBUTION AND MODIFICATION" of GNU GPL Programs, "1. You may copy and distribute verbatim copies of the Program's source code as you receive it, in any medium, provided that you conspicuously and appropriately publish on each copy an appropriate copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty; keep intact all the notices that refer to this License and to the absence of any warranty; and give any other recipients of the Program a copy of this License along with the Program.

You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee."

We have invested a lot of effort in bringing this Chess Engine from a PC platform to the iPhone platform and also optimized the UI and the performance to suit the iPhone standards. We are also providing necessary support and future bug fix releases. Thus we charge a very nominal fee to support our effort in catering you with the best and most memorable iPhone Chess experience.

Does this Chess implement "en passant" rule"?
Yes, Chess Lite and Chess Pro implements it, as well as any other chess rule known to FIDE. Please check Wikipedia for the rules of En passant. You can check the complete chess rules from Wikipedia.

Can I upgrade from Chess Lite to Chess Pro by just paying the difference amount?
No. Chess Lite and Chess Pro are two different editions. You have to purchase them separately from iTunes App Store.

Do I have to pay for updates?
No. If you have purchased Chess Lite or Chess Pro, you are entitled for free bug fix updates. The updates might include some exciting new features as well.

There is a bug in this game and I have some suggestions as well, where do I send them?
You are welcome to report bugs, suggestions, and feedback or give testimonials. Send them to support@99games.in We will respond immediately.
